Breast cancer research
It is important to specify that, today, women with breast cancer are treated according to their pathology. There are four main techniques used: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. Monitoring and psychological follow-ups are also crucial steps in controlling breast cancer.
Medicine has progressed in all areas of the fight against breast cancer: prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. The energy expended for research in this field reflects the discoveries made.
Will breast cancer be defeated soon?
Each year, the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) seminar sums up the most recent exploits in the fight against cancer. Numerous discoveries are presented and they constitute major progress in treating breast cancer, which is hopeful for women’s leading cancer causing 5,100 deaths each year in Canada[1].
At the Foundation, we have been making it a matter of principle to finance extensive research in Quebec for several years. Following a very precise and competitive process, in 2008-2009, eleven Quebec researchers were granted $4 million in funds for promising research on topics figuring among the current topics presented at the prestigious ASCO congress. The main purpose of the three-year research projects, which are the subject of promising protocols, is to have their results published in certified international medical publications.
We hope that, in the near future, researchers will find a cure for breast cancer, which currently accounts for over a million new cases worldwide and nearly 300,000 deaths each year[2].
