The CIBC Run for the Cure 2011
More than $2 millions raised through the CIBC Run for the Cure!
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation are proud to announce that more than $2.6 million was raised in the 15th Quebec edition of the CIBC Run for the Cure, held on October 2, 2011, in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke simultaneously. A total of close to 30,000 people proudly sported the pink ribbon during this annual event, whose popularity grows from year to year.
“In 1997, 1,000 people took part in Montreal’s first Run for the Cure. You could say we’ve come a long way in 15 years! Some people are participating for their first time, while others are in their seventh or even fifteenth year. Each one of them has a story and their own reason for participating, but they all share a desire to make a difference. Every year, I’m deeply moved by their dedication to the cause,” said Mitsou Gélinas, serving for a sixth year as spokesperson for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation and the Run in Quebec.
The money raised by the Run will enable the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation to fund a number of initiatives across the province. In recent months, it has donated $250,000 to the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation to support its financial assistance program for women affected by the disease, and $400,000 to the Institut national de santé publique du Québec to upgrade two mobile mammography units.
“Since it was established, the Foundation has invested more than $20 million in research and support programs here in Quebec to develop state-of-the-art treatments and improve early detection. Although mortality rates have declined, it is unfortunately still the form of cancer that affects the highest number of women in Quebec. The statistics are encouraging, but we must persevere in our efforts, now more than ever, so we can one day live in a world where breast cancer is no longer a threat to our mothers, our sisters and our friends,” explained Nathalie Le Prohon, president of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s CIBC Run for the Cure is the largest national fundraiser organized by volunteers. The main activity of the day was presented by Cousin Vinny and Claudine Prévost (Montreal), Joanne Boivin (Quebec City) and Valérie Sirois (Sherbrooke).
The Foundation wishes to thank all volunteers, committee members and partners that helped make this day unforgettable!
