One of my Loved Ones Has Breast Cancer

Listen

Every person who has cancer goes through emotions such as anger, uncertainty, guilt, sadness, depression, anxiety and stress. Each person reacts differently. Moreover, the treatments they go through may cause them pain or discomfort in addition to the pain caused by the disease. It is normal that your friend, spouse or relative may not be at their best and be more irritable than they usually are. Keep this in mind and try to not take things too personally.

Adopt a listening attitude and give them all of your undivided attention. Avoid telling them that you understand what they are going through unless you have had cancer. Be patient and understanding.

Sometimes, the smallest gestures are the ones which are the most heartfel:

  • A telephone call
  • A night out to the movies or a dinner at her favourite restaurant
  • A relaxing walk
  • Comforting words
  • A bouquet of her favourite flowers
  • Talking about things other than breast cancer
  • A bit of humor can bring some happiness to her day and help her forget about her illness for a while
