Metro Awareness Breakfast

2009 Edition

Metro Awareness Breakfest

The 12th edition of the Metro Awareness Breakfast was held on October 21, 2009, at the Montreal Sheraton Centre. This year, the event was held under the theme of good nutrition, bringing together over 932 secondary 5 students.

On arrival, students were invited to informative kiosks staffed by Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), Tel-Jeunes, Montreal Hooked on School, and Grandma Emily’s Granola, who offered them practical information on healthy living.

For the second time as a guest speaker, Dr. Richard Béliveau, author of Foods That Fight Cancer, was able to captivate the students from start to finish. With humour and scientific knowledge, Dr. Béliveau, renowned cancer researcher, helped them understand the importance of good nutrition and physical activity in preventing disease. All subjects were addressed, from cancer-fighting phytochemical compounds found in food such as broccoli and blueberries, to the harmful effects of excessive sugar and lipid consumption. These young men and women will remember the lesson learned that morning for a long time: building and cultivating a healthy future starts here and now!

Skillfully hosted by Kelly Alexander from Virgin Radio 96, this event was one of the most informative for its participants, who left with arms full of presents! This just shows that educating through entertainment can be possible.

We wish to thank Metro for its involvement as the main sponsor for a second consecutive year, the co-chairmen of the event, Lorna Denham and Anouk Terbraak, the hononary president, Kim Fuller from Phil Communications, as well as all of our sponsors who contributed to the success of this great event.
