One of my Loved Ones Has Breast Cancer
Offering Your Help
The daily life of a person with breast cancer is turned upside down and sometimes becomes too heavy of a load for her to carry. Offer practical help that will help your friend or spouse be less tired and feel less alone.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Propose to take an appointment with a hairdresser or a beautician
- Propose to bring the children to daycare or school or to baby-sit for a couple of hours
- Do their laundry, cleaning, or dishes
- Do their groceries
- Prepare a meal and if you have time, prepare several and freeze them (by considering the nutrition restrictions she may have because of breast cancer)
- Accompany them to the hospital or to her doctor’s appointment
When supporting your loved one, you must never forget that helping others does not mean neglecting yourself. Cancer not only affects the person who has it. Loved ones, no matter how loving, cannot shoulder all of the responsibility. Support and listening services are also available for them.
